building a stand out of wood is eazy.

I made mine out of 2x6 and ply wood...

just make a box out of the 2x6 the size of your tank. then screw a plywood cap on it...

cut some legs to make it as tall as you want it and use plywood for the sides... the plywood will give the legs sheer strength (you really only need to use the plywood on the back and sides and can use some hinges and what have you to make a door on the front.)

took me about 40 mins a skill saw one sheet of plywood and 30 lin ft of 2x6 to make a stand for my 55g

Hi fishygurl,
Here's a pic of a 10G. combined stand/canopy I'm building this weekend (securing the canopy so that my daughter can't knock the light into the water).

First I made a simple stand out of pine, then a simple canopy. Both are the same length and width as the frame of the tank.
Next, drilled holes for airline and electrical cords.
Then placed tank on stand, added canopy, and joined canopy and stand with a connecting piece of pine.
Lastly, three coats of paint and then it's on to aquascaping the tank.

Good luck with your project!

My mother lives for wood projects. Last years project for me was my shelves...I believe that her and I can put our heads together and think up a nice plan. I don't want my tank too high up, but I also don't want it to be a strain when cleaning time comes around. I think 2 feet would be a good height and possibly a little holder for the net, I hate it when I have to use it and put it down somewhere where it won't damage anything. Plus a little bit of shelving space, perhaps a long drawer for equipment and such. I'm thinking cedar or pine. Cedar smells good, and when stained it can match the rest of my room. If anyone has any other thoughts for this, let me know. I plan to post the plans when we've got them worked out.
