Do a google using Ambystoma mexicanum. Should bring up info.

As far as keeping them in a pond I wouldn't do it but people have(usually indoors). The danger would be temperatures and the very real possibility of helping to transmit diseases to the native amphibians.

Its not the worry about too cold but rather too warm.

Also...in NZ I bet their are very strict regulations regarding ponds...and likely something about amphibians too. I know NZ has several native frogs(4...originally seven but three have gone extinct) and their is likely legislation to protect from possible disease introduction. Again...look into the laws for that. Personally if I were their I would not risk it.

There are a lot of axolotals around in fish shops here and I live in the city so there are no native frogs around us (they live in the bush).
