Hi all

I am desiging a filter(cannister) it will be constructed of a 25L (6.6G) water container (Drum style). This will sit on the floor and I'm planning on using 2300L/H powerhead to pump the water down into the side top of the drum. Then it will flow into a homemade spray bar, then the water will spray onto a foam pad sitting on lots of Bio-Balls.

I will leave aprox 20cm (8 Inches) at the bottom of the drum for water to build up where a second power head will pump the water back up into the tank. Also desiging a overflow (incase of build up).

Does this sound like a good plan?

The only flaw that I have in my head is that the bottom powerhead will run dry because of lack of water(water flow won't be quick enough to pass through the foam and Bio-Balls)

Also thinking about injecting DIY C02 into this unit, sorry about the long boaring post, hope you can understand what I'm planning, all comments welcome thanks.

Hi milkman,
It is a good plan, but just 1 question, why are you going to use 2 pumps ? you can do the same filter using only 1 pump and use gravity to take water out of the main take to the filter. That way if a pump fails it will not empty you aquarium. Or if a pump is faster than the other you will end up with unwanted results.

Hi and thanks jazzo, I've only just thought this up in the past hour before posting it. I wasnt sure about 2 pumps this is only a trial version, I'm not sure if gravity will pump enough water flow to fill the bottom. I just got my 2200L/H powerhead (previous post said 2300 but its 2200 L/H) This will pump the water from the tank (might use gravity) but the powerhead only cost me $15 AUD

Hi milkman,
Well, if you insist to use 2 pumps be careful where to place the powerhead in the main tank. Place it to the top as possible, so that if something happen it will not drain all your tank.

You can get an idea of how to do it. ( Someday I will try one of these in one of my aquariums, but right now I'm concentrating on my rack system.)
