I am looking for ideas to make a little pond for my goldfish on my roof top terrace. I was wondering if a kids paddeling pool would work, if I added a filter and air pump? at the moment my fish is in a 20 litre aquarium, and he needs an upgrade. and also, of the little pool will work, would I need to line it with pond liner? thanks a lot.

Should work nicely unless it gets cold enough to freeze there. Being aboveground, it might freeze through in winter, depending on your climate. Overheating in summer may also be a concern.

I live in the canary islands, so it never ever get close enough to freeze. I thought about it overheating, but I would be keeping it under a canopy all the time.

do I need to line the pool with pondliner? or can I just give it a good rinse and fill it up?

I don't think that will be necessary. You should be fine without it. If it does overheat in the summer, you can float milk jugs with frozen water in it...may help.
Keeping in mind that goldfish do not tolerate high temps well.

honestly it does get hot here, in the summer it can be 40+. but under the canopy in complete shade it should be OK... I guess I just really need to keep an eye on the temp. milkjugs are a good idea.

in the end I went and bought one of those ready made ponds. it was going to be too much work any other way!

so far my fishy is going great, the only problem is the filter I bought isn't the greatest, so I have to do BIG water changes every 4 days or so. Rolling Eyes I am still in the process of adding plants bit by bit, my next purchase will be a mini nymphaea so give a bit more surface cover.

I have been looking for a little friend for my fish, but the only ones my LFS has the minute is celestials (sp?).

here are a few pics to show how it worked out. I still want to put somethiing around the base to dress it up a bit, I tried with some bamboo blinds (the cheapy one from IKEA) but I couldn't get them to stick to the side!

Isn't the coloring on goldfish great when they are outdoors?
