*bump*

Just seems to be getting worse. What ever happened to all the photo competitions and things like that? The old regular posters, admin, mods etc seem to have disappeared. (Anyone heard anything from Marcos on the matter?)

I have noticed the decline now for awhile. Its ashame to see that happen to this board as its one of the best. I think a lot of it is time constraints and economy is what plays a big part of it. With me I am up to 62 tanks to take care of so that takes a lot of my time on a daily basis.

Yep, decline has been happening for a while now. Many of us got busy with other things and it doesn't look like anyone stepped up to fill the gaps.

I would guess that Marcos has also gotten quite busy with his work too and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any other admin to fill in.

I think a lot of the other forums are a lot more lenient on things like cycling, tank size, stocking, etc. because it means more members. The site I was participating in a few months back (in addition to this site) usually recommends fishless cycling but also has stickies on cycling with fish and seems to find that acceptable. They also use AquaAdvisor stocking levels a lot, whereas here more conservative stocking levels are recommended.

Is a huge membership worth the trade off? I really don't think so. It gets frustrating being one of the only voices advocating strongly against cycling with fish, keeping bettas in proper tanks, and not putting bronze cories in 10g tanks. I also feel that there is something to be said for a small membership, as I cannot possibly keep up with several hundred posts per day. I do have other interests in addition to fish, as well as a job and a family (a one year old just learning to walk means I get very, very little computer time at home Laughing ).

I definitely would like to see more members on this site but it seems if people don't hear what they want to hear about the proper way to keep fish, they'll go where they can continue to feel good about keeping fish improperly. Sad

I'm glad this site is firm on proper fishkeeping practices.

Interesting thread! And I agree with a lot of what was said here. Aquahobby's data base and site content are pretty much unrivaled, if you see what's out there. This is what I like best about this website - and all the great members, of course! It will get going again, I'm sure of it.
Very Happy

Its all thanks to justin bieber, young people need to get back to good hobbies and activities that refresh the mind, I'm sure if I start posting again, the popularity of this site will just skyrocket, thats just what I do Laughing

This site inspired me to get serious about this hobby. It made me realize I could do so much more than a cheesy tank with plastic plants and out of scale fake decorations. I took to heart the ethics that are firmly adhered to here. I read and read and read, and when I thought I knew enough, I set up a planted tank which is beautiful and the highlight of my living room, and now I get so much more out of the hobby. I would like to see more participation, but I'm just as guilty of not posting much as anybody. Perhaps restarting the photo contests would help? People do like to show off their set ups, and I like to look at them. Other sites just don't have the same feel, I have not joined any others.

This site is really informative and I have learned a lot. I love how the 'Gallery' and 'Garden' entries list only the most essential requirements, then let the keepers talk about their experience. Everybody can learn from the different stories and know what to expect. I notice that 'Tank of the Month' has not been updated for 4 months now. I hope Marcos is only busy.

I have seen a decline in fish forums in general. I was very active in one. I left for about a year when I bought my new house, and it all has went dead. Very few posts per day. I think Nicks comment about the economy and time/money constraints has a big part in this. A lot of people don't have time to spend on the site or don't make it a priority as much as they maybe should. We have a responsibility to help "new" fish keepers fine the RIGHT answer to their problem quickly and effectively. I hope more people begin to frequent these sites again and get them back up and running. I know people have questions. Hopefully, this is where they can find those answers.
