| Are fish okay to go like 30 minutes without a filter while I clean their cage? |

Probably. Fish can live through power outages provided their tank stays warm enough, and thats at least a couple hours. Unless your fish is INCREDIBLY sensitive I wouldn't worry about. Anyway if your fish was truly that sensitive the stress from you cleaning the tank is more of a worry than the lack of a filter IMO. _________________ John Hancock |

What exactly do you mean by "clean their cage"? I hope it doesn't mean you're planning to take everything out and rinse it clean, that's one of the greatest mistakes made by beginners... _________________

You siphon out some of the water, ideally using a gravel cleaner and picking up detritus from the substrate.
Then you replace with fresh , dechlorinated water.
Depending on tank size and stocking you should be changing 10% to 40% weekly.
The filter media does not need changing, it just needs rinsing in water from the tank -never under the tap. |

| Everytime I tried using that it would always stop andget gravel stuck all in it and when I got as much as I could, the water still looked dirty. |

In that case you have too many fish, are not cleaning often enough or are feeding too much.
Probably a combination of all three. |

Have you heard of the nitrogen cycle? By over-cleaning the tank you remove (or kill with chlorine) all of the bacteria that maintain stable, healthy water. What size tank do you have, what sort of filtration, and how many/what kinds of fish?
If I were you I would go and read up on the nitrogen cycle and proper method for cleaning and caring for a tank, all of which can be found on the articles section of this site. _________________ Please, oh Please can someone help me!?
