Everyone seems to have different opinions on this. Anyone have any experience/facts on the matter?

I've heard it is irreparable - others claim antibacterial treatments would help.

Also curious about duration and concentration of ammonia needed to cause serious damage.

(Eye damage etc also relevant here)

I'm not sure of the exact science behind it but I have seen fish with very red gills due to water quality start looking normal after a few months in good quality water. I cannot say whether their life expectancy was affected, though, and I don't know that I would use any specific treatment other than fresh, clean water.
