You're first mistake was taking tap water to put your fish in. Use the water they come from, then you acclimate them to tank water. Think of it this way: You don't take your own bucket of tap water to the LFS and tell them to dip the fish out and put them straight in the bucket.

Looks like you have some bluefin killifish in there too, and perhaps Heterandria formosa also. The golden topminnows look good. So, yeah, you need to know about cycling, but remember that the stress you are seeing is from the shock that the fish received when netting from there water and put into tap water with probably a totally different water chemistry and temperature. Just something to remember for next time. I'd say ditch the Gambusia next time.

thanks for the advice, I will use the local water next time, but also I guess there's a possibility it's largely injury, stress from capture, meanwhile I will cycle my tank, I do need a boyfriend for my rowdy gambusia girls though. that was only the second flagfish I've seen though, any hints on increasing my chances of finding flagfish?
