I am new to tropical fish keeping (about a month) and I think I was doing OK regular water checks show my tank as on the top line of the tests
I have a 95 litre tank and we have
2x sailfin mollies
2x peppered catfish
3x sunset palties
on saturday I was given three fish and trust me when I say the water they were in was disgusting
there are 2 red tipped sharks but they are pale pink with black eyes and are very peaceful
the problem is the tiger barb I think hes turning into a "tank terror"
he had digestion problems which we followed the vets advice and now he seems OK do I need to get more similar sized barbs to stop him bullying other fish or am I at tank limit?

You are already overstocked. Sailfin mollies are large bodied fish that require hard water. Depending on species these alone could fully stock a 95 litre tank. depending on species they may do better with some salt.
Peppered cats are hardy but need to be in a group and cannot tolerate salt.
Platies are fine with either.
Red finned sharks are territoriakl as they grow and they can reach 6" -about 180 litres is minimal for one.
Tiger barbs need larger groups (8+) to spread aggression and larger tanks.

What are your actually water readings and what test kits are you using?

What made you think the barb had digestion problems?

I actually went to the trouble of tracking down a vet that specialised in tropical fish and they suggested it was either digestion or swim bladder butto try the live food first and see if that helped
we were told by our local fish store that after adding the mollies and waiting a week the others would all do OK
then I wasgiven the other 3 fish the tiger now does not swim "wonky" and gets on well with his other tank mates
I do not know what the lvls actually were but the pet store uses the chemical drops on a sample of our tank water and said that we were doing well
I am due to have the water re tested to see if we are stilldoing OK at the end of this week

Find out what tests they do & the actual levels. OK is not good enough.

What is your water supply's hardness?

How much water have you been changing & what dechlorinator please?

You shouldn't be adding any more fish and need a home for the barb & one shark at least.

hi there,
um tiger barbs are little terrors unless kept in groups of 6 or more and due to your tank being already somewhat overstocked this is no longer possible return the tiger barb to your lfs or simply start a 'barb tank' Laughing
