Hey there,
So I want to do a Malaysian Peat Swamp biotope for a Betta. I have read that they're natural habitat is one of low pH; but I have also read that the Betta's we buy from most LFS's today are accustomed to neutral pH and would not adapt to a lower pH (I want to use peat as a substrate which will lower pH). So has anyone actually kept a Betta in lower pH conditions successfully? I don't want to just try it and kill a fish.

Thanks.

Natural habitat has variable pH.

Why would you want a peat substrate as it is very messy? Leaves make a better base.

Trying to do the biotope thing, I have read that it's messy though. I know they're natural hab is variable pH but as I said I read that the one's we get at our LFSs have been bred in neutral pH and a lower pH may kill them. Wondering if anyone has successfully kept a Betta in a lower pH, maybe 5.5-7 in that range?

Natural habitat is more like pH 6.5.

I have kept Betta in acidic water but for breeding nearer 7.0 gave more success.

Betta spendens are not native to Malaysian Peat Swamps so the biotope is incorrect.
