just a thought I had.....when people buy fish from they're "local" fish supplier why do the worry so much about the hardness and pH of the water they will be releasing they're new charges into?.after all they are local are'nt they?.

My local supplier runs three different systems -soft, local (mid) & hard as well as specialist tanks for Amazon imports and brackish. These fish would suffer if plonked into swater that was wildly different.
TBH though most common & captive bred species are not fussy & a stable pH is always better than a yoyoing one.

Giving fish optimum conditions should be the aim though - if you have hard water keep fish that thrive in it, Soft water is easier to adapt.

I have soft water & keep SA cichlids, river species and a few odds & sods. I also keep shelldwellers & have to modify all the water I use for their tank.

I can travel 5 miles to a village with a hard water supply.

More often than not, they use chemicals, which change the chemistry, as well.
