I like the idea of a custom sump, but space would be an issue within a jewel aquarium stand(121 cm).I was thinking more in the way of a canister filter.

I only have personal experience with Fluvals ... I really like mine. I've used a 304 for five years now. I added a 403 a little over a year ago and have never had a moments problem with either of them.

I do hear great things about Eheim canister filters also.

In one side of a Juwel stand I would use a Fluval the size up from basic rating amd have the hoses long to allow input & outflow at opposite ends of the tank.

I've never had much luck with Eheims.

I just saw this: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/diy-aquarium-projects/62265-diy-pvc-pipe-canister-filter-step.html

Which is the closest thing to a DIY cannister I would even attempt. Depending on prices in your area, I would probably just pick one up.

I would go with an Eheim canister.
