More like anchored with fishing line - polystyrene floats and can be weighted to sit at whatever depth you wish.

That sounds like the only possible way but if it was, execution was very good. The slightest current would make the polystyrene move which would make ripples form. I'm guessing the ripples on the left were due to the hairdryer effect. The floating islands look very much like Ohko stone too, same stuff that is used on the substrate.

Does anyone else also find it strange that you can't see the floating island in the reflection on the left pane of the tank?

not really..it is far enough up front that it doesn't catch in the reflection. look at the reference points that DO reflect..
