We should do a "Best tank for under $300" contest.

Quite aside from I've never spent a dollar on an aquarium in my life.

I was talking about the complete setup, just to see how nice/big of an aquarium people have done with a smaller amount of money.

You live in England you would use pounds not dollars, but you can use the equivalent.

By the way I know $300 is not a small amount, but with aquariums it is if it is for a medium/large tank/setup.

How would you go about proving that under $300 was spent. Couldn't people just lie and say they got stuff free/cheap?

That is true, I was hopping that people would be some what honest.
It is not like there is a prize or anything.

I have a 50 gal that was given to me along with 2 filters. All I bought for it was a bag of sand for $6.00, and the fish came out of my other tanks, as did the plants.

There are many people that get deals like this so it wouldn't be a fair contest.

What about a 75g rimless? I would only be paying $200 for sand and fish and filters.

there would have to be something to judge it on if you went with that kind of contest. For example, my boyfriend took part in a 4x4 contest called "Cheap Truck Challenge" on Apex mountain last year, and it was featured in Can 4x4 magazine. The basis was to have the entry vehicle cost less than $1500 after purchase, parts, fluids, tires, etc. This could be from great deals, but not freebies or "loaned" parts from friends and family for the purpose of the event.
Of course lots of this is based on competitor honesty.
The judging was based on the ability of the trucks and drivers to complete tasks in different competitions, like rock gardens, mud bogs, tire changes, etc.

If you could come up with a method of judging (not just "best plants" as this has no basis other than preference) then this could work.
