Thanks everyone for taking part in the survey! I've had an excellent response and the survey will be closing soon, so if you haven't had a look yet this is your last chance!
I'm going to respond to some of the feedback I've received but since my answers could potentially bias results, please do the survey before reading on! If you've already done the survey, give yourself a high five from me and read on...

This was a major concern when planning the survey. In some ways, this bias is a good thing since I'd rather get have my future research informed by the more knowledgeable people! But since I'm also interested in less experienced fish keepers I also advertised the survey on general pet forums and forums totally unrelated to petkeeping. In preliminary results, I do have decent numbers of non-fish owners and people who used to own fish but no longer do, so I should be able to make some valid comparisons between groups.

I've had quite a few comments on this issue and now I'm wishing I'd put in more options for that question! However, the survey has fulfilled its purpose in pointing out the lack of specialist fish vets and it's something I'll enquire more into as the project continues.

Another good point- this data is most useful in respondents who only have one tank, about 1/4 of respondents. I didn't want to overload respondents by asking them more in depth questions, so I tried to keep it as simple as possible while still getting useful data.

In this case interesting refers to interesting for the fish, not the human. I wanted to know what enrichment people provide for their fish, without using the word enrichment, which not everyone answering would understand.

This is actual exactly what I'm trying to find out! Do most people equate memory with intelligence? Many animal welfare organisations assume that if they tell people that particular animals have good memories or complex behaviours and then people will decide the animal are intelligent and we should protect them. I'm interested to see if people actually do equate memory and behaviour with intelligence, and if their beliefs about animal intelligence influence their attitudes to welfare. This will help welfare organisations target their messages better.

I've found studies that show people accurately self rate themselves and some that show people are really bad at this... it probably depends on what they are rating. So far people seem to be rating themselves fairly modestly, but it will be interesting to see how the ratings correspond with the experience and knowledge questions.

Actually, I'm in need of community consultation now...
The next part of the research involves interviewing people who work in the aquarium/ pet fish industry about their experiences in sales, the types of customers they get and their views on fish welfare. The idea of these interviews is to get some more insight into the issues raised by the survey.
So, I was wondering if anyone knew of any aquarium or pet stores that would be good to work with? Or not so good to work with but would give interesting results?
I'm trying to get a representative sample of good, bad, specialist and non-specialist stores. If you'd like to suggest a less reputable store it's probably better to PM or email me though! My email is msullivan@admin.uwa.edu.au
Perth stores are best since that's where I'm based, but might be able to arrange phone or skype interviews interstate.

Does this include online stores? Might be an easy task to mail a few online retailers e.g. livefish.com.au, aquagreen.com.au - I suspect you will have the whole "what is this questionaire contributing to..." issue with retailers as they would obviously not want new legislation to complicate their business.
I can give you a list of the major stores I have frequented in Melbourne:
Subscape (good, wide variety, plants)
Upmarket (only buy equipment)
Boronia (okay, plants)
Coburg (so so, "superstore"), same owner as Upmarket
St Kilda (not bad, haven't been there much)
Mentone aquarium (so so)
No idea how they rank on knowledge, I have fallen into a habit of revealing as little as possible about my set ups or why I want particular items.
Perhaps consider asking Pet's Paradise too? They're pretty crap at everything in my opinion.
Another interesting thing would be if you could ask staff at Sydney/Melbourne aquariums, Zoo etc - last time I dropped by the Zoo they had a couple of fish exhibits in their reptile house that contained obviously sick fish, would be interesting to see how they'd rate themselves. They might be more responsive to performing a survey on welfare than your average store.
