I have a tank that has been fishless cycled for about a week and I have just been adding ammonia everyday to keep the bacteria alive. Ammonia and nitrite were at zero, and after my big water change nitrates droped to 10.

Now all of a sudden this afternoon I have .1 Nitrite!

What could cause this? What should I do now?

Thanks!

It takes longer than a week to cycle a tank

As Fern mentioned, a cycle takes longer than a week to finish.

The 0.1 nitrite that you have appearing is the beginning of your cycle. Continue adding your ammonia, and keep monitoring your ammonia and nitrites.

Were you not adding any ammonia for a week, and then just start adding ammonia again? If there was no ammonia source for the week following the big water change, the bacteria died and you will need to start over.

Did you test your tap water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates?

I say just keep adding the ammonia until it goes back down to zero again. At least then you will know it is properly safe for the adding of fish Smile

Did you add donor media from another tank?
