I suppose my question would be why would someone want to set up a tank so that they could move away and ignore it???

I think it would be easier to have mostly plants and very few animals.
If you were to have no animals at all it'd be a piece of cake, but not incredibly exciting. Shrimp are probably your best bet, since they have much more efficient systems. Most shrimp aren't fussy eaters and produce very little waste.

I believe it is a saltwater ecosystem, but some of the principles employed by this product could be used in your own project.

You could also look closely at aquatic micro-environments which occur naturally, such as billabongs (or oxbow lakes) and tide pools, although most of these have external inputs.

hey
I know this is a late post. but I myself am doing a school project where I will be trying to build a self sustaining aquarium, like you have done. so I was wondering, were u successful in making one? what did u do from start to finish? which organisms did u use?
