hi this is just completely out of intrested but why are killifish called killis if they are supposedly peaceful fish? I don't keep killifish but oneday I would like to but absolutely no where sells them
Kilde is the root for Killifish. Kilde means small water, small creek, pool, or puddle. Hence Kildefish = Killifish. I am not sure what language the root word came from though - but it is not Latin. Maybe someone else knows more about that..
Most killifish live, or at least spawn in water often less than 6 inches deep.
I know several killifish fry do not survive or develope properly (swimbladder) if hatched in a deep tank.
like diademhill said, some may only live one year, spawn, and then die. However, many killies live 3+ years and some Fundulus sp live at least 5+ years. So it really depends on species.
I was given an adult (about 6 months old) Nothobranchius guentheri male that I had for 18 more months, so you can keep at least some annuals for longer than a few months. I had him in a 6 gallon, alone, with a 73F to 75F temperature range. He got a good amount of frozen mosquito larvae, bloodworm, mini mysis, and live fruit flies and blackworms. _________________ Rucker

IIRC the word Killifish is of Dutch origin, meaning what Uncle Willie wrote above.
As for being a waste of money, I guess it all depends on the eye of the beholder. Some people think that having an internet connection and posting messages on forums is a waste of time and money
Think about this: while the vast majority of fishkeepers, even experienced ones, will most of the time have their fish die of one cause or another long before they reach old age (often times long before they even reach adulthood), for a few dollars Killifish owners get to experience the full range of their animal's lifespan, pretty much exactly as nature meant it to be... _________________ Success with a fish/tank is measured in YEARS, not months or weeks...
