I was wondering how much live rock I should get for a 55gal tank. This tank should have a skimmer and sump. I also want to grow some macro algae or plants in the main tank where should I go for info on that?

I think as much as you can, the more the better (obvisously not too much so that your fish don't have any where to swim) Razz

Around here usually $13-14 (Au), but probably different depending on where you live. Or you can order it online, but I have never done that and don't know what the prices are like.

IIRC, I paid about $7/pound (Cdn). It will probably vary from shop to shop. If you can find any local aquarists selling it cheaper, you might be able to save a few bucks that way.

In euros, where I am, you have to pay around 22euros a kilo for Indonesian Grade A live rock!!!!!!

Or 15 euros a kilo for Fiji live rock!!
I'm sure it probably works out the same in conversion rates but..still I feel I'm paying way more than you guys!!

You can always buy dead rock and mix it in with live rock. After about 4-7months the dead rock will become live rock. Dead rock cost about $1.50-$3 USD.

I recommend searching the classifieds ads in your local paper to find some good deals on rock. I found a complete setup that someone wanted to sell a while ago that included the tank (which I use for an auto top off tank), a skimmer (that I use now), a bucket of salt, and some live sand, along with lots of other misc. supplies that I either used or sold. I basically ended up getting 60lbs. of live rock and a 33 gallon aquarium for free after I sold all the junk and used everything I needed.
