I read in a book yesterday that if corys lose there barbels they can't find their food. I will have pea gravel for substrate. Is this okay?

As long as it's pea gravel that's not been treated with anything it should be fine. If you are buying it from a fish store specifically for fish tanks then no problem. If you are going to a garden supply/hardware store, etc. then just make sure that no chemicals have been used on it and that nothing has been added to it as 'extras'.

What if the corys barbels where off from digging around a lot? Is that possible?

Not if they are digging around in pea gravel.
They will lose their barbels if the water quality is not good.

That, and its also if the ammonia/nitrates levels are to high.
