Definitely no bichir or knife fish. The cons would probably kill the knife the second you released it, and the bichir will go for any fry your cons may produce, and will die for its efforts.
There are other fish that are compatible with convicts, but your tank isn't really big enough for any of them. Your filter is strong enough, but you need to remember that cichlids are territorial. There's just not enough territories to go around.
That said, you also should remember that your fish are going to GROW. Your tank looks empty now, but it won't look very empty once all your cons mature and start to make babies.
I have a 40g breeder with 5, 1/2 inch cons and nothing else. I feel your pain. If you are absolutely dying to add something, try to find some different cons -- like pink or albino -- to add some flavor but not overstock your tank. |

I doubt you could ever put tiger barbs in a tank with large cichlids, no matter how big the tank. Tiger barbs may be fiesty, but that doesn't change the fact that they will easily fit in the mouth of your convict... _________________
