Do I have to turn on my light for my fish at night? Someone I know said that my kois would need at least 12 hours of light.

I honestly don't know much about koi but a few wise fish keepers on this board have told me they need to have a regular day-night cycle: Lights on during the day for about 10 hours and lights off at night. I turn mine off on my 10G freshwater at about 8pm and turn them back on at about 6:30-7am. One guy put it this way to me: If you didn't have eyelids and had lights on you 24/7 wouldn't that stress you out???

I hope this helps. There are much more knowledgeable people on here than I am but I'm assuming that most fish have the same light/dark requirements.

but isnt it pointless to put the light on in the morning since there's already sun-light?

No, fish need more light then that. Leave your light on from 8-12 hours a day, leaving it on more will more likely cause a algae problem. If you have koi inside a tank how large is your tank?

Oh wow! I just noticed that you have an 80G tank. Are all those koi in that one tank????
Don't they get pretty big???

Edited to add: I just checked the gallery and to answer my own question, YES! They do get very big. They recommend putting them in nothing smaller than a 250G tank.

unless you keep plants, lighting is just for the aquarist to view the fish. don't leave it on for more then 12 hours a day or algae will grow.

My kois are pretty small since I just got them and I'll make a pond in my backyard when they get big enough. And I don't keep algae plants in my tank so does that mean my light never has to be on?
