I have been cycleing my tank for 3 days now with a zebra danio,

55g tank
temp is 78 degrees
filter is penquin 350

so far my test don't show anything happening.

I thought the fish was to add amonnia and get my cycle going, do I need to add more fish?

should I have better luck getting some media of some sort from a fish store?

One fish for a 55g tank will take a while before the ammo is going to show up in your test. I would prefer a fishless cycle.

In this case, I would just wait for few days before doing anything. Cycle a tank can take up to a month (or more). So, take your time. No need to rush.

I would agree with Fishlover, the single Danio is going to take ages to build up any significant levels of Ammonia, and this will mean your cycle will take ages, if you get more fish, you have a chance of exposing them to toxic chemicals (Ammonia and Nitrite).

Whe it is cycled, and you add more fish, the tank will go through a "Mini" cycle to cath up with the increased fish load.

If you want to cycle this tank fast, take the Danio back to the shop, do a fishless cycle, then add fish, with luck you could have fish in there in just over 3 weeks, with no dead or stressed fish.
