I have had great success keeping a female Mandirin fish for about four years. I give her no special feeing as I have allot of live rock with allot of critters for her to feed on. She has however seemed to learn how to eat frozen brine shrimp. One of the strange things I have noticed is that if I get to my tank before dawn I sometimes see her in a sort of suspended animation state. She is basically almost completely grey and displays absolutely no movement whatsoever, even her gills are completely still - as if she is dead. The first time I saw this I almost fished her out thinking she was dead!! I have browsed the net for more info on this, but to no avail. Anyone know about this behaviour?

It's just camouflage so that nobody goes after her while she rests/sleeps. My mandarin does that also. I usually think she's dead when she does that also.

a friend of mine has caught his in this same state, actually stuck to the overflow. it then magically resumes its daily chores after the lights have been on for a few minutes. scary but normal!
