if you don't own the macroalgae, beg, borrow, or buy a bit of cheato (nickname for a stringly looking macroalgae from the genus chaetomorpha)
you can use any lighting even something as cheap as the clip on sockets with a spiral fluorescent bulb in it. There's a spot light version that's popular.
If your tank has no fish, then you can buy a small bottle of fertilizer to really give the chaeto a jump start... if you have fish and other waste producing animals, then it'll grow without adding anything...
hope that helps. _________________ "Just don't look in my fish room honey... it's just better for all of us. " |

I was under the impression that Chaeto required a decent amount of light and flow to grow, can you actually grow it at a decent rate under a CF spotlight?

| Quote: | | It is also highly adaptable to a very wide range of lighting [Tip: illuminate most macroalgae in refugia with at least 1 watt of light per liter of water at depths less than 30 cm]. Like most "vegetable-filter" algae species, moderate to strong water flow is necessary; keep a total water flow of at least 20X turnover of the volume of the culturing vessel. |

hum...on the nano-reef.com forums, people are starting to make fuges out of their 2nd rear chamber. by simply cutting the vinyl off the back of the cube, throwing lr and chaeto in the chamber and placing a 5w 6700k clip on fluor. or similiar lighting, the chaeto grows like mad and well, more so than how much lighting but the correct lighting I believe chaeto grow best at 6700K. I'll scrounge up the thread later _________________ MY FISH IS BETTER THAN YOUR FISH!!!!! |
